What are the 4 stages of grammatical development
One word/holophrastic stage
Two word stage
Telegraphic stage
Post-telegraphic stage
What is the holophrastic stage?
Age: 12-18 months
Using only one word to communicate ideas
Eg: ‘shoe’ could have many meanings - wants a shoe, can see one etc
What is the two word stage?
Age: 18-24 months
2 word utterances using subject+verb/verb+object
Eg: ‘me fall’
What is Telegraphic stage
Age: 24-36 months
Combining 3 or more words. Subject+verb+object/subject+verb+complement/subject+verb+adverbial.
Eg: ‘daddy go work’
What is the post-telegraphic stage?
Age: 36+ months
When remaining function words are acquired and used appropriately.
- Child can combine clause structures by using coordinating/subordinating conjunctions (and/but & because/although).
- Can manipulate verb forms more accurately eg using passive voice (car was followed by the lorry)
- construct longer noun phrases (the two big red buses)
