Reasons for consolidation of eme
1604 - Robert cawdrey’s first English dictionary reflected interest in standardization
1660 - renassaince in science standardized technical terms and imported Latin/greek words into English
1662 - book of common prayer helped consolidate English religious language
Transition to late modern English reasons 1700-1800
1755 - Samuel Johnson works on dictionary of English language & standardized spelling and punctuation
1794 - Murray’s English grammar used Latin rules to define good usage eg sentence shouldn’t end in preposition
Why is spelling different today to in EME
- spelling now standardized, wasn’t then ( <y> <v> graphemes used interchangeably)</v></y>
- moved further from gvc so have lost more silent e
- use graphemes v and u differently now. One indicates consonant sound, one indicate vowel sound.
