(Right to left)

How is the accent grave pronounced an e = è
Left to right
left to right = è
è = (eh)
open pronunciation

- What does this indicate
- What vowels use the diaeresis
- two dots indicate the pronunciation of both vowels next to each other.
- Is only used on ë ï ü
Where is the cédilla used?
Only used on the consonant ç before the vowels: a o u
And indicated the pronunciation as (sa) not (ka)
Capitalisation : nationalities
- adjectives
- nouns
-adjectives do not use capitalisation
for example lucie est français
-nouns however are capitalised
for example John est un Français de Lyon
Capitalisation: Languages
Languages are not capitalised in French…
ils apprennent l’arabe = they’re speaking Arabic
est-ce que parle anglais? = do you speak English?
Capitalisation: Religions
-one exception
all but Islam are uncapitalised..
le christianism = Christianity
where as
L’Islam = Islam
Capitalisation: dates, times, months and seasons
All aren’t capitalised…
for example:
août = August décembre = December
Capitalisation: Geographical Nouns/Names
Geographical names are capitalised…
les États-unis = the United States
l’Asie = Asia
L’Europe = Europe
La Nouvelle-Orléans = New Orleans
