What is the Subject of a sentence?
The Person, Place, Thing, or Idea that performs the action (Predicate) of the sentence. It also represents what the sentence is about.
What is the Predicate of a sentence?
Most commonly referred to as the verb of the subject, this part of the sentence explains what the subject is doing.
What is a Compound Subject?
A Subject that consists of two or more noun phrases together to form a longer Subject. Or (more simply); The Subject and all of it’s friends
What is a Compound Predicate?
Also known as a Compound Verb, this part of the sentence consists of two or more verb phrases together to form a longer Predicate. Or (more simply); The Predicate and all of it’s friends.
What is a Prepositional Phrase?
A group of words in a sentence consisting of a Preposition, the Object of The Preposition, and any possible Modifiers of The Object.
What is a Preposition?
A word before a noun, noun phrase, or pronoun to indicate direction, time, place, location, spatial relationships, or to introduce an Object. (Remember: “whatever a squirrel can do to a tree, car, spaceship, etc.”)
What is the Object of a Preposition?
The noun or noun phrase that the Preposition describes or affects. Together, (with possible modifiers), they make a Prepositional Phrase.
What is a Direct Object?
The “whom” or “what” (noun or noun phrase) the subject acts upon, being the Object of the action, “receiving” the verb. (Remember: “What you verbed”)
What is an Indirect Object?
The noun phrase of the “whom” or “what” is affected by the direct object, usually what the direct object is done for. (Remember: “WHOM or WHAT you verbed for”)
What is a modifier?
A word, phrase, or clause that gives more information about another word in the sentence. Modifiers usually aren’t necessary to convey the meaning of a sentence.
Find the Subject and Predicate:
“The husky and pitbull chased the black cat”
Subject: Husky
Predicate: Chased
Find the Compound Subject and Compound Predicate:
“Me, Gabe, and Jacob beat and slapped the shit out of Koby for existing”
Compound Subject: Me, Gabe, and Jacob
Compound Predicate: Beat and slapped
Find the Prepositional Phrase of the sentence:
“Deep in the African Sahara, the tiger hid in the grass to ambush it’s prey”
Prepositional Phrase: The tiger hid in the grass
Find the Preposition and Object of the Preposition in the sentence:
“She hurriedly caught the bus on time”
Preposition: On
Object: Time
Prep Phrase: On time
Find the Direct and Indirect Object of the sentence:
“I handed a present to Mr. Daudelin, since he gave me an A on my quiz”
Direct Object: A present
Indirect Object: Mr. Daudelin
