Subordinate Clause
Begins with subordinate conjunction or a relative pronoun (who, which, whom, etc). There is a verb and subject. Remove subordinating word for main clause. No comma when it follows main clause, comma when before main clause.
Participle Phrase Fragments
Begins with a word ending in ing or ed. (Could be irregular verb like broken or swum). Modifiers and objects may follow, but cannot be complete thought. Add main clause to fix. Use comma when attaching after and before.
Infinitive Phrase Fragments
Begins with to, followed by base form of the verb. To + verb = infinitive. Add subject and conjugate verb to fix. Attach after to keep infinitive verb, no comma. Comma when before
Afterthought Fragments
Clarifies earlier info with more details. When it has no main clause it is a fragment. (Especially, except, for example etc.).
Lonely Verb Fragments
No subject. Begins with coordinating conjunction (and, but, for, or, etc.). Leaves an unanswered questions.
Appositive Fragment
Noun phrase that renamed and clarifies another noun. Begins with noun and a clarifying phrase or subordinate clause follows.
