Q

deshalb type sentences

A

“Deswegen” or “deshalb” are adverbs that mean “therefore” or “that’s why”. They are used to indicate a causal relationship between two clauses or sentences.

The grammar structure for “deshalb” is as follows:

Clause 1 (main clause), comma, “deshalb” or “deswegen”, clause 2 (subordinate clause)

Example: “Ich habe viel gelernt, deshalb habe ich die Prüfung bestanden.”
(I studied a lot, therefore I passed the exam.)

In this sentence, “ich habe viel gelernt” is the main clause, “deshalb” is the adverb indicating causality, and “ich habe die Prüfung bestanden” is the subordinate clause.

The word order of the clauses can be reversed, but then the verb of the main clause has to be moved to the second position in the sentence. For example:

“Deswegen bin ich müde, weil ich gestern spät ins Bett gegangen bin.”
(That’s why I’m tired, because I went to bed late last night.)

In this sentence, “deswegen” is the adverb indicating causality, “ich bin müde” is the main clause, and “weil ich gestern spät ins Bett gegangen bin” is the subordinate clause. The verb “bin” has been moved to the second position in the sentence.
