Q

What is the “N-Declension”?

A

The N-Declension is a way of which certain masculine nouns in the German language are declined.

It doesn’t follow the typical declension of the masculine nouns and is characterized by the ending -n in all of the cases except the Singular Nominative

Nouns for which it is generally used:

Masculine nouns with an ending -e

Masculine nouns ending with:
-and, -ant, -ent, -at, -ist

Certain masculine nouns which don’t belong in these groups:
Der Bär, der Bauer, der Fürst, der Graf, der Held, der Herr, der Architekt, der Mensch, der Nachbar, der Fotograf, der Prinz, der Ungar

Only one noun which isn’t of masculine gender:
das Herz

Example of a N-declined word (der Herr) compared to a “normally” declined one (der Mann):

Sg:

Nom der Herr der Mann

Gen des Herrn des Mannes

Dat dem Herrn dem Mann

Akk den Herrn den Mann

Pl:

Nom die Herrn die Männer

Gen der Herrn der Männer

Dat den Herrn den Männern

Akk die Herrn die Männer
