What is a sentence fragment? (Pg. 2)
Is a group of words that looks like a sentence but that does not contain both a subject and a verb or doesn’t express a complete thought.
Ex: Giving a speech about whales.
What is a sentence? (Pg. 2)
A word or word group that contains a subject and a verb that expresses a complete thought.
Ex: Lori will be giving a speech about whales.
What does the subject do? (Pg. 5)
It tells who the or what the sentence is about.
Ex: In English class THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY was the discussion of Davy Cockett.
What does the predicate do? (Pg. 5)
Tells something about the subject.
Ex: The class READ SEVERAL TALL TALES ABOUT THIS ADVENTUROUS FRONTIERSMAN.
What is the simple subject? (Pg. 6)
Is the main word or word group that tells whom or what the sentence is about.
Ex: This BOOK on ecology will provide information for my report.
What is a complete subject? (Pg. 6)
Consists of all the words that tell whom or what the sentence is about.
Ex: THIS BOOK ON ECOLOGY will provide information for my report.
What is a simple predicate? (Pg. 7)
Is the main word or word group that tells something about the subject.
Ex: Aidan GOES to the movies every weekend.
What is a complete predicate? (Pg. 7)
Consists of a verb and all the words that modify the verb and complete its meaning.
Ex: Aidan GOES TO THE MOVIES EVERY WEEKEND.
What are verb phrases? (Pg. 8)
Such as verbs are called verb phrases (verbs that include one or more helping verbs).
Ex: What DOES this error message MEAN?
What is a compound subject? (Pg. 10)
Consists of two or more subjects that are joined by a conjunction and that have the same verb.
Ex: Numerous TREES and BUSHES respond to seasonal weather changes.
What is a compound verb? (Pg. 11)
Consists of two or more verbs that are joined by a conjunction and that have the same subject.
Ex: Which mammal HAS wings and CAN FLY like a bird?
What is a declarative sententece? (Pg. 15)
Makes a statement and ends with a period.
Ex: These letters are I, V, X, L, C, D, and M.
What is an imperative sentence? (Pg. 15)
Gives a command or makes a request. Most imperative sentences end with a period. A strong command ends with an exclamation point.
Ex: Use Roman numerals whenever you write an outline, Margo.
What is an interrogative sentence? (Pg. 15)
It asks a question and ends with a question mark.
Ex: Did you know Roman numerals consist of seven individual letters used as numbers?
What is an exclamatory sentence? (Pg. 15)
It shows excitement or expresses strong feeling and ends with an exclamation point.
Ex: What a difficult job that would be!
