What is a minor sentence?
Non standard- lacks standard subject/verb combination
Eg. ‘Sounds good’
What is a simple sentence?
Sentence with just one main clause-includes subject and main verb
Eg. ‘This room stinks’
Compound sentence
Sentence that links an independent clause to another independent clause causing a co-ordinating connective
Eg. ‘I live in Darlington and I go to QE’
Complex sentence
Sentence which consists of a main clause and a subordinate clause connected by a subordinating connective
Eg. ‘When I think about sentences, I get got flushes’
Declarative sentence (sentence function)
A statement that gives info
‘The river tees is 85 miles long’
Imperative sentence (sentence function)
A sentence which gives orders, instructions and directions
Eg. ‘Wear your lanyard even in the bath’
Interrogative sentence (sentence form)
A sentence that asks a question
Eg. ‘Who are you going to call?’
Exclamative sentence (sentence function)
A sentence with an expressive function conveying forceful emotions like anger, surprise, humour
Eg. ‘This grammar stuff rocks!’

What’s the difference between sentence type and sentence function?
Sentence type- refers to grammatical conjunction
Sentence functions- purposes- what it’s trying to achieve
