What is an adverb
Modify adjectives adverbs verbs and other parts of speech. It never modifies nouns or pronouns
What is an adjective
Modifies nouns and pronouns
articles a, an, and the are considered adjectives
What is a noun
Person, place, or thing. Never act as modifiers
What is a verb
Expresses an action, stated being or occurrence
What is an action verb
Transitive direct object or intransitive no object
What is a linking verb
Links and noun(predicate nominative) or adjective(predicate adjective) to the subject. Can be replaced with is, are, or am in the sentence still makes sense
What is an interjection
Not part of the main sentence; often expresses an emotion of some kind
What is a pronoun
Takes the place of nouns. Must have a clear or implied antecedent
What are the eight types of pronouns
Personal, possessive, demonstrative, interrogative, relative, indefinite, reflexive, intensive
What are the three types of verbals
Infinitives, gerunds, participials
What do infinitive verbals act as
Nouns, adjectives and adverbs.
Start with “to”
Ex
To live in Boston eventually is his main goal in life. (the infinitive phrase works as the subject of the sentence)
Quentin Tarentino loves to babble during interviews. (object of the verb “loves”)
Do you have any clothes to donate to the homeless shelter? (adjective, modifying “clothes”)
She went home to visit her family. (adverb, modifying “went”)
What do gerunds act as
Nouns
End in -ing
Ex
Eating ice cream on a windy day can be a messy experience if you have long, untamed hair.
Eating ice cream on a windy day = subject
What do participle verbals act as
Adjectives
End in -ing or -ed
Ex
The horse trotting up to the fence hopes that you have an apple or carrot.
Trotting up to the fence modifies the noun horse.
The water drained slowly in the pipe clogged with dog hair.
Clogged with dog hair modifies the noun pipe.
Eaten by mosquitoes, we wished that we had made hotel, not campsite, reservations.
Eaten by mosquitoes modifies the pronoun we.
What is a prepositional phrase
Begin with a preposition, and with a noun, and include all modifiers such as adjectives and adverbs
What is an appositive phrase
A noun, noun phrase, or series of nouns place next to another word or phrase to identify or rename it
