Descriptive Grammar
Describes a language the way people use it without judging for correctness
Prescriptive Grammar
Concerned with correct usage
Gerund
Verb with -ing attached to it that functions as a noun
i.e. I love RUNNING
Antecedent
The person or thing that defines a pronoun in a sentence
i.e. Joe works in the post office and he likes it
Interrogative Pronouns
Who, Whose, Whom, What, Which
Demonstrative Pronouns
That, This, These, Those
Indefinite Pronouns
Everyone, Everybody, No one, Nobody
Transitive Verb
Require an object
i.e. Chris writes books
Intransitive Verb
Verbs that do not need objects
i.e. Chris is sleeping
Adverbs
Answer how (sloppily), where (here, there), to what degree (very, hardly), and when (now, later, yesterday)
Coordinating Conjunctions
and, but, nor, for, or
Correlating Conjunctions
either/or, both/and, neither/nor
Subordinating Conjunctions
when, since, because
Appositive Phrases
Are offset with commas, further describing nouns
i.e. Mr. Dobbs, our teacher, is here.
Simple Sentences
Straightforward sentences
Compound Sentences
One sentence contains a subject and verb, and the second sentence contains another subject and verb.
Complex Sentences
If the sentence has an independent clause and a dependent clause, it is complex.
Compound-Complex Sentence
If the sentence has two independent clauses and a dependent clause, it is compound and it is complex.
Determiner
Term for an element preceding a noun in a noun phrase.
i.e. the, that, two, a, many, all
