Pronoun
Words used rather than a noun eg. He, she, it, myself, anyone, nothing, i, you
Verb
Word which shows action (dancing, singing, running) something is happening (became,is) or state of being (suspect, believe)
Articles
Indefinite articles ( a + an) - unknown identities
Definite articles (the) - known identities
Adjective
Word which describes the attribute of another, also known as modifiers (happy, blue, little, lovely)
Noun
Word which refers to people, places, or things (Hereford, Emma, cat, desk, pen)
Adverb
Word that modifies another adverb, adjectives or verbs, also known as modifiers (just, softly, so, very)
Preposition
Tells you where/ when something is in relation to something else. Often indicate ‘location’ (on, in, amongst, between, to) ‘the boy ON the platform’
Idiolect
Our distinctive and individual style of speaking which is influenced by our personal and social identities
Copula verbs
Linking verbs- used to join an adjective or noun to the subject of the sentence. (seems, becomes are, is). Jane (noun) is (copula verb) hungry (adjective)
Infinitive
Basic form of a verb. Infinitive phrases have ‘to’ followed by a basic form of a verb (to love, to dance, to sleep)
‘to’ - infinitive particle ‘to find’ - infinitive phrase
Standard v non standard English
Standard English- using ‘correct’ form of the language
Non standard English- using variants which are not deemed correct
Eg. ‘Should rather’ than ‘should have’
Minor sentences
Incomplete sentences (going to shop) rather than (I am going to the shop)
Also knows as ellipsis or elliptical sentences
Contractions
Words abbreviated (didn’t, shouldn’t, could’ve)
Double negative
Using two or more negative elements in a sentence (he don’t know nothing)
Intensifiers
Modifiers used to over or underestimate something.
High intensifiers- (really, very)
Low intensifiers- (quite, just)
