Gram negative Bacilli Flashcards
What bacteria is oxidase positive and indole negative
Pseudomonas Aeruginosa
- CF lung infection
- Diabetic foot
- Burn infections
- UTI - esp. catheters
(Also non lactose fermenting)
What bacteria is oxidase positive and indole positive
Haemophillus influenzae
- Septic arthritis
- COPD exacerbations
- Pneumonia
What is the oxidase test
Determine if a bacterium produces a certain cytochrome c oxidases
What is indole test
Ability of certain bacteria to decompose the aa tryptophane to indole
What bacteria are oxidase negative
Bordetella pertussis (whooping cough)
Enterobacter
What bacteria are oxidase negative, lactose fermenting and indole positive
E.coli
- UTI
- Gastroenteritis
- Abdo infections
What bacteria are oxidase negative, lactose fermenting and indole negative
Klebsiella Pneumoniae
- UTI
- Abdo infections
- CF lungs
What bacteria are oxidase negative and non-lactose fermenting
Proteus mirabilis = UTIs
Shingella Spp = gastroenteritis
Salmonella Spp = s.typhi = typhoid fever
Most common cause of UTIs
E.coli = 80-90%
S. saprophyticus
Less common cause of UTIs
Pseudomonas Aeruginosa
Klebsiella Spp
Proteus Spp.
Enterobacter spp
KEEPS
Klebsiella
E.coli
Enterococcus
Proteus
Saprophyticus
Lower UTI symptoms
Dysuria
Urgency
Frequency
Cloudy or foul smelling urine
Haematuria (micro or macro)
Suprapubic tenderness
Upper UTI symptoms
Fever
Confusion
Loin tenderness
Prior Hx of above Sx
Dipstick (under 65’s) results for UTI
Nitrates reduced to nitrites = E.coli and Proteus
Treatment for UTI
Oral Nitrofurantoin or Trimethoprim
Pregnancy - Cefalexin
Simple = 3 days
Complicated = 7 days
