Gradual Loss Of Vision Flashcards
What is retinitis pigmentosa?
A clinically and genetically diverse group of inherited diffuse retinal degenerative diseases intially predominantly affecting the rod photoreceptors
What is the classic trilogy of Retinitis Pigmentosa?
1) Bone-spicule pigmentary retinopathy
2) Arteriolar narrowing
3) Waxy pale disc
Define blindness.
Blindness is visual acuity of less than 3/60 or a corresponding visual field loss to less than 10 degrees around central fixation, in the better eye with the best possible correction.
What is visual impairment?
Refers to a visual acuity worse than 6/18 in the better eye.
What are some ocular causes of gradual loss of vision?
1) Refractive Error
2) Media Opacities
3) Retinal disorders
4) Optic Nerve head damage
Non-ocular causes of gradual loss of vision are usually?
Neurologic and visual pathways disorders
Primary Optic Atrophy occurs:
without an antecedent swelling of the optic nerve head
Examples of reversible causes of gradual loss of vision include:
1) Refractive Error
2) Corneal Blindness
3) Cataract
4) Diabetic Macular Edema
