Grade 11 biology (genetics) Flashcards
Difference between multicellular organisms and unicellular organisms?
Multicellular= cell division, growth, and repair
Unicellular= reproduction
What is the key feature of cell division?
Passing chromosomes from parent cell to daughter cells.
What is genetic material?
Where is it contained in a chromosome?
All material an organism stores.
In a chromosome genetic material is contained in DNA.
What are the 4 nitrogenous bases?
- Adenine
- Thymine
- Cytosine
- Guanine
What are the 3 main components in a DNA molecule?
a) 4 nitrogenous bases
b) a phosphate group that has a - charge
c) a penthouse sugar
What is nuclein?
Give an example.
Information that controls cell functioning?
An example would be when the top is removed from algae it will regrow because it has received chemical messages from the nucleus.
What is X-ray crystallography (not that important)
A method to determine arrangement of atoms within crystal using a bean of x-rays which strikes a crystal and refracts into many directions.
What is the chemical backbone made out of?
What is attached to backbone?
Phosphate and sugar groups.
Nitrogenous bases are attached to backbone.
How is DNA like a compliment?
1/2 of DNA molecule is a ‘compliment’ to the other half (both halves are symmetrical making it easy to see what the other portion looks like.
