Grade 10 Science: Optics - Anatomy of Eye Flashcards
What is the Cornea
A clear outer layer of the eye made up of living organisms. The clear layer covers the iris and pupil
What does the Cornea do?
When light hits it, it refracts through the pupil
What is the lens and where is it?
It is behind the pupil and is a convex lens, it is also attached to ciliary muscles
What does the lens do
It focuses light onto the retina, it uses ciliary muscles to contract or relax depending if it wants to focus on nearby objects or distant objects
What is the retina and where is it?
A layer of light-sensitive tissue located in the back of the eye
Underneath the choroid and above the Fovea
What does the retina do?
Convert light into electrical signals (for the brain). It forms the image inverted
What is Hyperopia?
Farsightedness
- Can see objects that are far away but cannot see objects that are close clearly
- The light is not refracted enough to make the lens not being able to turn thick enough
Myopia
Nearsightedness
- Can see objects that are close but cannot see objects that are far away clearly
- Cannot make lens thin enough and thus light is refracted too much
Astigmatism
When you struggle to see anything!!
Due to irregular shape of cornea
What and where is the Sclera
The white outer layer of the whole eye (basically the white of the eye)
Where is the ciliary body?
underneath the Sclera, attached to the lens, behind the iris
Where is the Choroid?
Underneath the Sclera by the top-back of the eye, above the retina
Where is the retina?
Underneath the Sclera and the Choroid (or behind) in the back of the eye
Where is the Fovea?
Underneath the Sclera, (behind) the Retina
Where is the optic nerve?
Behind the eye, connecting to the brain, that whole area.
