Gracie - Cell Reproduction Flashcards
Mitosis
second stage of cell cycle - chromosomes condense and separate, divided into four phases/steps
Fragmentation
some organisms, when cut at certain points, will either regenerate body parts or split into two new organisms.
Chromosomes
the DNA of a cell is organized into visible structures.
Metaphase
the phase of mitosis where the chromosomes are lined up in the middle
Binary Fission
cell division of bacteria or prokaryotic cells.
Chromatids
each half of a duplicated chromosome, held together at the cetromere.
Interphase
the stage where the cell copies its organelles and DNA, cells spend most of their lives in this stage
Prophase
the phase of mitosis where the nucleus disappears and the chromosomes are visible
Budding
a new organism grows off an existing organism
Eukaryotes
complex cells that have a nucleus and a complicated cell cycle
Homologous
chromosomes with matching information, you get one from mom and one from dad in each pair
Anaphase
the phase of mitosis where the chromosomes separate to opposite sides of the cell
Gametes
sex cells (eggs or sperm)
Cell cycle
begins when the cell is formed and ends when the cell divides and forms new cells.
Cytokinesis
the last stage of the cell cycle where the cytoplasm divides
