Gr.8 Simple Machines Flashcards
define force
any push or pull
define work
work- the result when a force moves an object a certain distance
define energy
energy- the ability to apply a force to move an object a distance
define efficiency
efficiency- being able to do something with the least waste of time and effort
explain the differences between clas 1,2 and 3 levers
class 1- the fulcrum is in between the load force and the input force class 2- the load force is in between the fulcrum and the input force class 3- the input force is in between the load force and the fulcrum
what is load force?
Load force- the force that the input force has to overcome in order to cause movement
what is the fulcrum?
fulcrum- the pivot point of a lever
what is the input force?
Input force- the effort force applied to the lever
what is the lever?
The Lever- a rigid bar that pivots at a point called the fulcrum.
Ex. Crow bar
what is a gear?
Gears- toothed wheels used to speed up or slow down motion.
Ex. Drive gear
what is a pulley?
The pulley- a wheel with a grooved rim around which a cord passes.
Ex. Well
what is a wheel and axle?
The wheel and axle- a large diameter disk attached to a small diameter shaft.
Ex. steering wheel
what is a screw?
The Screw- an incline plane that has been cut into a central core.
Ex. spiral staircase
what is the wedge?
The Wedge- a modified incline plane tht can be moved back and forth with ease.
Ex. doorstopper
what is an incline plane?
The Inclined Plane- is a tilted, flat surface.
Ex. wheelchair ramp
