Gr.8 Fluids Flashcards
what are the 3 types of buoyancy?
positively buoyant: floats
negatively buoyant: sinks
neutrally buoyant: neither sinks nor floats
what is density?
density is the amount of mass per volume of a substance.
what is hydropower?
hydropower is derived from running/falling water and is used for irrigation and the operation of various mechanical devices. it is a renewable energy source but destroys biologically rich lowlands.
what is the Archimedes principal?
the buoyant force is equal to the weight of the displaced water.
what does the pressure law state?
as the temperature of a gas increases, pressure increases.
what does Charles’ law state?
as the temperature of a gas increases, volume increases.
what does Boyle’s law state?
as the volume of a gas increases, pressure decreases.
what is a fluid?
a substance that has no fixed shape and yields easily to external pressure. (especially liquids)
how do you calculate density?
density equals mass divided by volume.
how do you calculate flow rate?
flow rate equals volume divided by time.
which is more viscous, milk or caramel?
caramel.
what is displacement?
to push water out of the way.
why do some things float when others don’t?
because water is heavy.
