GR 10 CHEM NO2 + ACIDS AND BASES Flashcards
a + b =ab
addition or synthesis
eg. h2 + o2 = h2o
ab = a+ b
decomposition
eg, h2co3 = h2o + co2
a + bc = ac + b
single displacement
eg. Zn + CuSO4 = ZnSO4 + Cu
ab + cd = ad + cb
double displacement
eg. AgNO3 + KBr = AgBr +KNO3
Combustion is
rapid reaction of a substance with oxygen to produce now substances called oxides
combustion equaion or law idk
fuel + oxygen = oxide + energy (exothermic energy)
incomplete cumbustion
occurs if there isnt enough 02 gas available LMAO L
properties of acids
sour tasting
water soluble
reacts with reactive metals
properties of bases
bitter tasting
water soluble
HX(S) = H+(AQ) + X (AQ)
general formula for acids dissolving in water
X(OH) (S) = X+ (AQ) +(OH)- (AQ)
general formula for bases dissolving in water
acids are also called
electrolytes
congo red in stomach acid with a PH of 1.52
blue/grey
bromothoyal blue in sugar solution with pH of 7
pink
neutralization reaction
chemical reaction in which acid reacts with base to form salt and water. it is type of double replacement reaction. (e.g. HCl + NaOH = H2O + NaCl)
pH scale
used to measure pH. ranges from 0-14, if solution has pH if less than 7, it’s acidic. basic solutions have pH of greater than 7. neutral substances have pH of equal to 7.
acid-base indicators
used to identify acids and bases by changing colours
hydrocarbon
A compound that consists of carbon and hydrogen. general equation for combustion of hydrocarbon is CxHy + O2 = CO2 + H2O. hydrocarbon combustions are exothermic.
exothermic reaction
chemical reaction in which there is net release of energy to surroundings. temperature increases as energy is released into surroundings
endothermic reaction
chemical reaction in which there is net absorption of energy from the surroundings. temperature decreases as energy is absorbed by system
activation energy
minimum amount of energy needed for reaction to happen
how do u balance a chemical equation
number of atoms on the reactant side must equal number of atoms on product side.
law of conservation of mass is reflected in balanced chemical equation.
use coefficients in front of chemical formula
coefficients
indicate how many molecules are present (in 2S8, 2 is the coefficient)
law of conservation of mass
in a chemical reaction, the total mass of the substances used is equal to the total mass of the substances produced
