GPS Flashcards
1
Q
Global Positioning System (GPS
A
is a technology that has been available for about 20 years. GPS is a global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). It uses a constellation between 24 and 32 earth orbit satellites that transmit precise radio signals which allow GPS receivers to determine their current location and time. GPS satellites circle the earth tice a day in a precise orbit and transmit signal information to earth. Atleast four a visible at any time.

Q
Features of GPS
A
- The ability to store positions and determine speed, direction, distance of travel, length of travel time and estimated time of arrival.
- Latitude, longitude and altitude details
- Map storage in the receivers memory
- The ability to trace your path across a map as you move
3
Q
What is trilateration
A
Trilateration is a simple mathematical principle that the GPS receivers job is based off.
4
Q
Strengths of GPS
A
- Makes it easy to navigate
- It works in all weather
- It works anywhere on earth
5
Q
Weaknesses of the GPS
A
- Sometimes the GPS may fail due to certain reasons and in that case you need to carry a backup map and directions.
- Most GPS systems only last 8-12 hours before needing a battery replacement or recharge.
- The position can be in error when the number of satellites is restricted.
