Government Responces Flashcards

Q

Response to undocumented immigrants

A

E- There is about 10-12 million people living in the US who are undocumented- they either entered illegally or stayed longer then they were supposed to. These people contribute under the US society, but are always worried of deportation and are blocked from accessing educations/benefits. Government policy has now focused on protecting young children who have came to the country for a pathway of citizenship.

E- the deferred action for childhood arrivals is an immigration policy started by the Obama administration in 2012. It gives immigrated children who have came to the country a work permit and safety from deportation for two years. The DACA is re-enable every two years. They must have completed school, be under 31 or have been discharged from the military.Over 2M have been benefited from this as its increased there wages and pulled them out of poverty.

However - supports of immigration reform argue that it offers no citizenship and is a stopgap measure. They say that the application fee of over $400 means that many undocumented people can’t afford it. Opponents on the republican side say that it is rewarding immigrants for entering the US illegally. The trump administration tried to end the DACA however they were stopped by the courts.

However - many people feel that it did not do enough to revolutionise healthcare, 30M are still uninsured. Bernie sanders and many other have called for a single payer like the NHS in the UK.

Republicans have tried over 70 times to repeal the ACA or challenge in the courts. They have not been successful yet.

Q

However response to poverty

A

However - many critics of SNAP have argued that because of pre packaging food is much h cheaper than fresh food. Many SNAP participants use their vouchers to buy there high fat/sugar foods in order to save money which can lead to unhealthy diets.

Another problem is not all retailers accept SNAP vouchers so many participates are travelling long distance to find somewhere were they can spend them.

Finally congress have decided to end the special benefits so by 2023 everyone participating in SNAP will go back to receiving pre pandemic amounts meaning a s smaller monthly food budget.
