What was Northumberland’s style of government?
A
Once in power organised the government to secure his position -
- Staffed household with his own men to then control Edward
- Held dry stamp
- This resulted in a more positive relationship with Edward than with Somerset

How did he use the Privy Council?
A
- He extended the importance of them (‘political genius’ - David Hoak)
- Made himself Lord President rather than Lord Protector (bad connotations) so that he had power to fix agendas and meetings.

- Cost of Scottish garrisons
- Troops removed from Scotland

A
- England gave up Boulogne for 400,000 crowns
- Marriage arranged between Edward VI and Elizabeth, Hen’s daughter, bringing a dowry of 200,000 crowns
- England pull all troops out of Scotland and not declare war unless provoked
- King of France no longer pay a pension to England

What were the effects of the Treaty of Boulogne?
A
- Humiliation to give up Boulogne - nobles and people aren’t happy
- But North needed peace and this permitted that - they gained large sums onyway
- Still kept Calais

What economic successes did Northumberland achieve?
A
- 1550 -1553 debts brought down 45%
- Stopping war and selling Bolougne = keep peace and improve finances
- Cut back on military and other government spending such as king’s grants
- Crown lands collected more effectively by Winchester - cut corruption = more revenue.
- 1551 cuts debasement = confidence in coinage

What social successes did Northumberland achieve?
A
- Acts of Parliment - stopped enclosures and protected arable farming & stopped money lending getting out of control
- Poor law 1552 - people giving money from their parish to help impotent poor
- No rebellions under Northumberland
