4 characteristics of any bureaucracy and any agency: hierarchical and pyramidal authority, division of labor is based on skill set, lots of rules and regulations, must implement policy as dictated by politics (bureaucracy must follow rules of congress).
define judicial review
-the power to decide what is and what is not constitutional
Marbury v. Madison
Judiciary act of 1789 unconstitutional- congress is not allowed to practice judicial review, it belongs to the courts.
Gideon v. Wainwright
1963 A case in which the Court held that the Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments guarantee a right of legal counsel ( an attorney )to anyone accused of a crime.

under the Fifth Amendment, any statements that a defendant in custody makes during an interrogation are admissible as evidence at a criminal trial only if law enforcement told the defendant of the right to remain silent and the right to speak with an attorney before the interrogation started, and the rights were either exercised or waived in a knowing, voluntary, and intelligent manner.

who the Chief Justice is
The chief justice is appointed by the president with the advice and consent of the Senate and has life tenure. His primary functions are to preside over the Supreme Court in its public sessions when the court is hearing arguments and during its private conferences when it is discussing and deciding cases. Chief Justice Tani Gorre Cantil-Sakauye is the 28th chief justice of the State of California. She was sworn into office on January 3, 2011, and is the first Asian-Filipina American and the second woman to serve as the state’s chief justice.
define original and appellate jurisdiction
original jurisdiction- a case is heard for the first time
Appellate jurisdiction- a court hears a case on appeal from a lower court and may change the lower court’s decision
