Amending the United States Constitution
Congress may propose an amendment by a two-thirds vote, and three-fourths of the states must ratify it
Federalism
“federalism” refers to the evolving relationship between state governments and the federal government of the United State
Republicanism
is the political belief that the best form of government is one in which citizens choose their representatives and leaders through free elections
Popular sovereignty
The term “popular sovereignty” refers to the principle that the legitimacy of the government is created and sustained by the consent of its citizens and that citizens are the source of political power.
Individual rights
Citizens of the U.S. are guaranteed certain individual rights by the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights. These individual rights cannot be expanded or taken away by any level of government without amending the Constitution.
Checks and balances
refers to the separation of power in the government, which is ensured through the establishment of three different branches: the executive branch, the judicial branch, and the legislative branch.
Separation of powers
the division of a government into branches, each with separate, independent powers and responsibilities, so that the powers of one branch are not in conflict with others. The legislative, executive and judicial branches
Separation of church and state
the act or state of keeping government and religion separate from each other
To Form a More Perfect Union
Forming a more perfect union can be found through laws that protect the entire country, a uniform currency, and also the interstate road system in the United States
To Ensure Domestic Tranquility
means that law and order are established and kept in the nation to protect its citizens.
To Promote the General Welfare
This can be seen in many aspects of the U.S. such as in laws that protect workers. Also, the federal agency the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) regulates food and medicine in the U.S. and determines if it is safe for human consumption
