1st Amendment
Contains the Establishment Clause prohibiting the establishment of a national religion. (separation of church and state)
2nd Amendment
right to keep and bear arms due to the need for a “well-regulated militia.”
3rd Amendment
prohibits the government from forcing citizens to allow soldiers to use their homes.
4th Amendment
protects citizens from “unreasonable searches and seizures.” Because of this amendment, warrants must be limited in scope and may only be issued with “probable cause.”
5th Amendment
Defendants cannot be forced to testify against themselves (self-incrimination). A person may not be “deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.”
Sixth Amendment
Right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury in the state where the crime was committed.
Seventh Amendment
provides the right to a jury in federal civil cases.
Eighth Amendment
prevents the government from imposing excessive bail or fines or “cruel and unusual” punishments.
The Ninth Amendment
clarifies that the Bill of Rights is not a comprehensive list and that people have additional rights that are not listed.
The Tenth Amendment
states that the federal government only has the powers specified in the Constitution. Any rights not mentioned in the Constitution belong to the states or the people.
13th Amendment (1865)
Abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime.
14th Amendment (1866)
granted citizenship to all persons “born or naturalized in the United States,” including formerly enslaved people, and provided all citizens with “equal protection under the laws,” extending the provisions of the Bill of Rights to the states.
15th Amendment (1870)
The third and final Reconstruction Amendment, the Fifteenth Amendment protects a citizen’s right to vote, regardless of “race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”
17th amendment
The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote.
18th Amendment (1919)
Banning liquor use within the nation.
