- made up of elected members,principal +co-opted members.
- number of parents must be in the majority.
members must consist of:
• Parents of learners enrolled at the school
• Educators employed by the school
• Members of staff who are not educators
• Learners in the 8th gr or higher at the school
• The Principal
- The South African Schools Act determines that a governing body
- should include:
a chairperson, treasurer and secretary. - sub-committees such as:
• executive committee, responsible for day-to-day issues
•. financial committee (fundraising)
• building and maintenance committee
• terrain committee (maintenance +development)
• marketing +public relations committee
• labour relations committee

**Functions of School Governing bodies
A
professional management of school is responsibility of principal.
- governing body= responsible for governance of school.
responsibilities of the governing body:
- Promoting best interests of school
- ensuring its development
- Drawing up a constitution
- developing a school policy( lang policy , code of conduct +admissions policy)
- Developing mission statement +developmental plan
- Suspending learner from attending school as correctional measure for no longer than a week,
- decision of provincial authorities on whether the learner = expelled.
- Introducing a school fund
- establishing appropriate structures
- Supporting principal, educators +other members of staff in the performance their professional duties.

A
- governing body is an instrument/ partnership
- All partners must understand + accept responsibilities (organisation, governance + funding of school)
- Classroom educators responsible- making partnership between parties
- work efficiently, rather than leaving it entirely up to the principal.
- educators could contribute to the success of the partnership:
• trusting + respecting partners
• sharing goals+ values
• sharing common vision +opening up the communication
• promoting teamwork +respecting the roles of the different partners
