What does ‘demos’, ‘kratos’, and thus ‘democracy’ mean?
Demos- people
Kratos- power of
Democracy- power of the people
What was Attica divided into?
Demes.
What were ‘demes’?
Local units.

Was everyone from each deme in one tribe?
No.
Why didn’t everyone from each deme join one tribe?
Demes were split apart so that there was representation from each demes in every tribe.
How many political tribes were there?
10!
Was every citisen in a tribe?
Yes!
What were the criteria for being an Athenian citisen? (5)
- Male
- 18+
- Both parents Athenian
- Enrolled in deme of father
- Free man (not slave)
What was not necessary to be a citisen?
For you to be wealthy.
Who could not be a citisen?
Women, slaves, metics, and children/ youths.
What was the council called?
The Boule.
How many citisens were on the Boule?
500 (50 from every tribe).
How were people selected to be on the Boule?
By lot- names drawn out of a pot. (PROBABLY THAT’S WHAT I THINK I HEARD)
How long could a citisen serve on the Boule?
1 year.
How old did you have to be to serve on the Boule?
30+
What was the name of the Athenian assembly?
The Ecclesia (just like Sparta!)
How old did a citisen need to be to be on the Ecclesia?
20+
What did the Ecclesia vote on?
Making new laws.
How did the Ecclesia vote?
By a show of hands (none of that silly Spartan ‘shout’ stuff…)
What sort of body of the state were the Ecclesia?
The SOVEREIGN body of the state (think Gonzalo’s lost utopia).
How often did the Ecclesia meet?
4 times a month.
How many Archons were there?
9
When did the role of the Archons originate?
During the pre-democratic period. Before democracy.
