Was education public or private?
Private! No state education system.
Was education compulsory?
No!
Where did education take place (classrooms, unspecific)?
In rented rooms of private houses or public property.
Did girls get a proper education?
No.
In terms of business and heading a household, who taught the boys?
Their father, the kyrios. They would be taught how to follow in his trade (apprenticeship).
Did they have years or sets?
Nope, you just learned with whoever else was paying.
What did the grammatistes teach?
Reading, writing, and arithmetic.
What kind of learning took place?
Rote learning- learnt off by heart through repetition.
What classical book was it common to learn about?
Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’. (poor souls)
What did the kitharistes teach? (5)
How to play the kithara, lyre,singing, reciting, and musical performance of poetry. (music teachers).
Which two places did physical education take place?
The gymnasium and/or the palaistra (your body is a temple- get it?).
What was PE preparation for?
Fighting in the Athenian army (compulsory for 2 or 3 years)
Why was mental and physical education so important?
Athenians believed in healthy body with a healthy mind.
Who supervised PE?
Paedotribes.
What were Athenian boys trained in when doing PE? (6)
Fitness, running, wrestling, jumping, throwing of discus and javelin.
What job might an educated slave have in a boy’s education?
Paidagogos.
When did boys begin education out of the house?
Age six.
Up until age six, who were boys taught by, and where?
By mother or male slave, in their own oikos (probably gynaikon)
What age could boys go to academies?
16, when their ‘basic training’ was complete.
What might mean boys couldn’t go to an academy?
Having to work,or not being rich enough to pay fees.
What did academies teach? (4)
Sciences, philosophy, the arts, culture. (any more?)
What view made Athenian education different from Spartan education?
Athenians wanted their sons to have a well rounded education so that they would know a variety of things and appreciate lots of things.
What else might the boys learn during basic education?
Anything else their teachers knew.
What would a mentor do if their boy misbehaved?
Whip them!
Name two Athenian academies and their founders.
