What is direct action?
A
- Any action seeking to achieve an immediate or direct result

What was the USA’s federal system?
A
- All individual states look after their own internal Affairs
- questions that concern other states (such as making treaties with other countries) are dealt with by Congress

A
- Layout how the government is supposed to operate
- what the government is/isn’t allowed to do
- designed to stop one individual becoming too powerful

What is Congress?
A
- Congress and the president run the country
- made up of the Senate and House of Representatives
- Congress and Supreme Court act as watchdogs checking how the president behaves

A
- makes sure US government doesn’t miss use their power and pass unfair laws
- Made up of judges usually experience lawyers
- they have the power to say that a law is unconstitutional if they feel like it will harm American citizens

A
- “ laissez-faire” (leave alone)
- Stay out of peoples lives
- Favourite big businesses and don’t like high taxes because it pleases rich people
- Left businessmen alone to create jobs and spend money

- They favoured helping those in need
- they were an ordinary peoples party
- they preferred to intervene in every day life if needed be

- the president in 1933 to 1945
- a democrat leader

A
The 3 R’s :
- Relief ~ help for the sick, old and homeless
- recovery ~ government schemes to help provide jobs
- reform ~ make America a better place for ordinary people + ensure a great depression wasn’t to happen again

A
- President in 1945 after Roosevelt died
- Implement at the Marshall plan
- established the Truman doctrine and NATO

A
- Put in place to help Americans most in need to bring a fairer society (African Americans rights, poverty)
- Minimum wage was increased from 40 to 74%
- supported clearing of slums to make affordable houses

- believed America could overcome any problem without any help
- left America to recover on their own
