Gout Flashcards
Allopurinol (Zyloprim, Aloprim)
Gout Attack Prevention
most common. Allopurinol is the most commonly used drug and the first choice for therapy.
Xanthine oxidase inhibitor
Decreases the production of uric acid
SE: Bone marrow suppression, vomiting, abdominal pain
Probenecid (Benemid)
Increases urinary excretion of uric acid
Ineffective if creatinine clearance is reduced
Avoid aspirin: Decreases drug effects, increases SE risk
T/F: loop diuretics, β-blockers, and immunosuppressants cause acute gout symptoms
true
Secondary hyperuricemia may be caused by conditions that increase uric acid production or decrease uric acid excretion of drugs that inhibit uric acid excretion
Corticosteroids (Prednisone)
treat acute inflammation
(Used instead of colchicine if renal impairment or adverse SE)
Colchicine***
treat acute inflammation
(anti-inflammatory but no analgesic effect)
NSAIDs or opioids
used with colchicine for pain management
