Which Gospels are synoptic and why?
Matthew, Mark, and Luke because they include many of the same stories, and often in the same sequence and similar wording
Where does the word synoptic come from?
“Syn” meaning “together” and “optic” meaning “seen”
What order were the gospels likely written?
Mark first, Matthew and Luke used Mark
When was Mark written and by who was it written?
Most likely written in 40’s and 50’s AD. The only reference to the author is in Mark 14:51-52
Who author’s Matthew?
The Apostle Matthew who is also known as Levi (The tax collector)
Who was Matthew’s target audience?
The jewish people. The evidence is in the “genealogy of Jesus” as well as many Old Testament references.
When was Matthew written?
Most likely between the 50’s and the 60’s AD
How many references to the Old Testament are in Matthew?
43 (Far more than Luke or Mark)
Who wrote Luke?
Luke, Paul’s companion
Who was Luke’s target audience?
The gentiles
When was Luke written?
57-59 AD likely during Paul’s imprisonment in Caesarea.
How did Luke make his gospel?
By “carefully investigating everything” and uses “eyewitness accounts”
What is the significance of Theophilus?
It means “friend of God” and shows us ACTS is likely written by Luke
