Why is food spread across exhibit
The keepers spread the food all across the exhibit so that the Gorillas forage for their food. Foraging is a natural behavior, and what gorillas spend most of their days doing in the wild. Foraging also ensures every gorilla gets their fair share of food, rather than the more dominant gorillas taking it all.
How much do gorillas eat a day?
50 pounds of food, mostly leafy greens
What are the foods you may see in the exhibit?
Sweet potato, broccoli, carrots, monkey biscuits, and browse- focus, banana leaf, hibiscus, Chinese elm, and roses
When do gorillas eat fruit?
Fruit is used as a reward during training sessions- but fruit intake is monitored very closely because they have high sugar content, and just like people, gorillas can get diabetes.
