Good Conduct And Key Moral Principles Flashcards
Justification
When used in ‘justification by faith’ and ‘justification by works’ - Christians are counted as righteous before God on the basis of faith or by works, or by both.
Predestination
The view that all events have been willed by God from eternity, specifically the fate of the righteous and of the damned.
Predestination in the New Testament
Romans 8:28-30
We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, in order that he might be the first-born among many brethren. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.
The qualities of God that support the view of predestination
Omnipotence and omniscience
The main criticism of predestination
It clashes with free will
The theologian that argues against predestination
Pelagius
The argument of Pelagius
Everything God created was good, and so God’s grace was His gift of free will to humans.
The theologians of predestination
Augustine and John Calvin
The doctrine of Augustine
Double predestination
Double predestination
Some are predestined to God’s Kingdom through his grace, the rest to be condemned to hell
Calvin’s view
In Adam all are guilty before God, all deserve eternal damnation, and therefore it is no injustice in God if some are lost; rather, it is a sign of infinite love if some are saved.
