good and evil Flashcards
evil
the absence of good and the impulse to seek our own desires at the expense of the good of others which often results in suffering
suffering
pain or loss which harms human beings. some suffering is caused by other human beings (often called moral evil); some is not (often called natural evil).
privation
the loss or absence of a quality or something that is normally present. Evil is a privation of good.
goodness
the quality of being like God:seeking the well-being of others selflessly.
free-will
the decision making part of a person’s mind is called the will. A will is free if a person is able to choose right from wrong without being controlled by other forces.
conscience
human reason making moral decisions. the knowledge we have of what is right and what is wrong and the God-given compulsion within all human beings to do what is right and to avoid what is evil.
natural law
The belief in natural law is the belief that the moral law is discoverable by every human being and is the same for all human beings in all places at all timesm
incarnation
“made flesh”. The Christian belief that God became man in the person of Jesus, fully human and fully divine.
salvation
the idea that “Jesus brings humans back to RELATIONSHIP with God” after they sinned and turned against God.
moral evil
actions done by humans which cause suffering
natural evil
things which cause suffering but have nothings to do with humans.
omniscient
the belief that God is all seeing and all knowing
omnibenevolent
the belief that God is all good and all loving
what do Christians think God is like?
- believe that he is all the omni qualities
- the existence of evil and suffering challenges their beliefs about God
- as their beliefs come from the holy book the Bible it challenges their religion
inconsistent triad
- maybe God doesn’t care about our human suffering or causes human suffering
- maybe God isn’t all loving
- people suffer so maybe God CAN’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT HUMAN SUFFERING
- maybe he isn’t all the omni qualities
Christian responses to the inconsistent triad
suffering could be a PUNISHMENT FROM GOD. St Augustine believed that HUMANS CARRY THE SIN OF ADAM AND EVE(original sin) so we must face the consequences
christian responses to inconsistent triad (test)
‘a test of faith’- God may allow suffering in order ‘to test and strengthen our faith
christian responses to inconsistent triad (gods plan)
‘God’s plan’- he allows evil to exist as part of his greater plan of love
how can a christian do to help people who suffer
pray, service, charity,
the story of Job
- the devil made him suffer
- all of his animals were killed and his children
- Job said we should accept bad things from God as well as good things
- he sad that his suffering from Gd was a test from God
St Augustine believed the Bible shows that God is all good.
god created a world perfectly good and free from pain, evil, and suffering
this is shown in the bible when it says “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.”
this means that:
God made all things good. Evil is not good. therfore God did not create evil
evil is the absence of good…
there is evil because there is a lack of good actions and decisions
evil comes from those who have “free-will” and not from God. the state of perfection was ruined by “original human sin” and the delicate balance of the world destroyed
there may be evil because
God wants us to punish us and make us suffer for the sins we have committed
this also allows humans to redeem themselves
What do christians think God is like
Christians believe that God is omi potent and so on. so the existence if evil and suffering challenges their beliefs about God. for example how can someone be all loving of he can make people suffer
