What are the features of Gonorrhoea?

A
  • Males: urethral discharge, dysuria
  • Females: Cervicitis (e.g. leading to vaginal discharge)
  • Rectal and pharyngeal infection is usually asymptomatic

  • Disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI)
  • Local complications
    • Urethral strictures
    • Epididymitis

What is the management of gonorrhoea?

A
  1. Ceftriaxone 500mg IM + Azithromycin 1g Oral. - both as a single dose.
  2. If ceftriaxone is refused or contraindicated use cefixime PO.

A

Disseminated gonococcal infection is the most common cause of septic arthritis in young adults.

Describe the classic inital triad of gonorrhoea infection and Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome.

A

Initially there may be a classic triad of symptoms: tenosynovitis, migratory polyarthritis and dermatitis.

Later complications include septic arthritis, endocarditis and perihepatitis (Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome)
