gonadotropins Flashcards
What are the 2 gonadotropins?
Luteinizing hormone (LH), Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
What is the function of FSH in males?
Acts in Sertoli cells in the testes to support sperm maturation
What is the function of FSH in females?
Promotes the growth an maturation of ovarian follicles and stimulates the production of oestrogen from the ovaries
What is the function of LH in males?
Stimulates Leydig cells in the testes to produce testosterone
What is the function of LH in females?
Triggers ovulation and stimulates the production of progesterone from the corpus luteum
What hormone do Sertoli cells in the testes secrete in response to FSH stimulation?
Inhibin
What are the negative feedback loops for gonadotropins in males?
Inhibin provides negative feedback to the anterior pituitary.
Testosterone provides negative feedback to the anterior pituitary and the hypothalamus
What are the negative feedback loops for gonadotropins in females?
Oestrogen and Progesterone both provide negative feedback to the anterior pituitary and hypothalamus
What condition arises from insufficient production of LH/FSH?
hypogonadism
What condition arises when LH and FSH are high at an inappropriately young age?
Precocious puberty
Excess secretion of which hormone is associated with PCOS?
LH
What is Kallman’s syndrome?
A failure of the hypothalamus to secrete enough GnRH, causing secondary hypogonadism
