Golden Rules of Skeletal Muscle Activity & Terms Flashcards
What are the 4 golden rules of skeletal muscle activity?
- With a few exceptions, all skeletal muscles cross at least one joint
- Typically, the bulk of a skeletal muscle lies proximal to the joint crossed
- All skeletal muscles can only pull → never push!
- During contraction, a skeletal muscle insertion moves towards the origin
Origin
Attachment of a muscle that remains relatively fixed during a muscle contraction
Insertion
The movable attachment of a muscle as opposed to its origin
Flexion
Bringing 2 bones closer together
Extension
Bringing 2 bones further away from each other
Hyperextension
Bringing 2 bones further away so that the angle is greater than 180 degrees
Rotation
Movement around the longitudinal axis
Circumduction
Proximal end is stationary and distal end moves in a circle
Dorsiflexion
Lifting motion of the foot
Plantar flexion
Depression movement of the foot (towards the ground)
Inversion
Sole of foot moving medially
Eversion
Sole of foot moving laterally
Opposition
Movement of thumb to the tips of the fingers
Prime mover
Muscle responsible for causing a particular movement
Antagonists
Muscles that react opposite to the movement of the prime mover
