What is a goitre?
Hyperplasia of the thyroid that forms due to a lack of Thyroid Hormone. The thyroid tries to make up for the lack of hormone by growing
What is the most common cause?
Usually caused by Iodine Deficiency
Other causes? (3)
Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, can be congenital, hypersecretion of TSH due to Pituitary adenoma,
Is it common?
4-7% of adults have palpable thyroid lumps, 95% are benign
Symptoms (5)
Associated with both hyper and hypothyroidism so can have symptoms of both. Swelling in the neck, nodules, pain, hoarse voice
Signs (2)
Dull sternal percussion, does not move on swallowing
What is the treatment?
*treat according to the cause, may need a thyroidectomy if it is large
