GOD'S EXISTENCE Flashcards
CLASSICAL THEISM
- god is the ultimate being
- the world depends on god but not vise versa
- god has certain attributes
WHAT IS GOD LIKE TO THE CLASSICAL THEIST
- morally perfect
- simple, no parts or attributes
- distinct from his creations
- necessity, GCB
ANSLEM’S FAITH
- faith and reason are in harmony with each other
- reason allows us to clarify religious beliefs
- there is no greater conceivable being than god
FIDEISM
- knowledge of religious beliefs are a product of faith alone, not reason
- a contrast to anslem
ontological argument thought process
- the reducito argument is absurd
- contradictory statement to show negation
- 2 statements cannot be true
- if we can undertsnad what god is, we understand he exists
ontological argument itself
- god doesnt exist
- god is gcb
- then the gcb doesnt exist
- gcb only exists in mind
- if gcb were to exist, it would be a greater being
- so gcb cannot only be in my mind
- god exists
ibn sina
necessary vs contingent existence assumption
- the set of contingent beings have a cause, it is external(god), therefore necessarry
Principle of sufficient reason PSR, and contingent
-everything must have a sufficient reason for its existence, including contingent beings
-god must be a necessary being for contingent beings
theodicy
an argument or theory that attempts to resolve the problem of evil
-imperfection contributes to perfection as a whole
Theism narrow sense
- Belief in the existence of an omnipotent, omniscient, eternal, supremely good being who created the world
the argument for atheism
*evil and suffering exist,
* so god doesnt have theism attributes
* god does not exist
responses to the problem of evil
rowe
*the greater good can superseed the evil
* free will defense- evil is from peoples free will
* we can’t see the whole picture
* the unreality of god- ontological status of evil
