The attributes of God

1
Q

On Mount Sinai, the Lord descended in a cloud and provided us a description of Himself. Exodus 34:6

A

Exodus 34:6 And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, 7 keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”

Q

What is iniquity?

A

Is the premeditated choice to sin without repentance.

For example, King David’s sin with Bathsheba that led to the killing of her husband, Uriah, was iniquity. The build-up of unrepentant sin is pictutured as a cup of iniquity. Once the cup has been filled to the brim, God will judge men and/or nations as seen in Romans 1:28-32.

Q

What is justice?

A

Is the demand of punishment for sin.

I am commanded to be holy: 1 Peter 1:16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

There must be justice for my sin: Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Jesus Christ paid the price for my sin.

Q

What is mercy?

A

Putting off my punishment rather than punishing me immediately after I have committed a sin.

God desires all to come to a saving faith:

Micah 7:18 Who is a God like You, Pardoning iniquity And passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in mercy.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Q

What is grace?

A

Is seeing my sin, not punishing me, and then giving me a gift instead of the punishment I deserved.

Ephesians 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses {justice}, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
