God Flashcards
Theism
Belief in God
Monotheism
One God
Polytheism
Many gods
Pantheism
God and the universe are one
Panentheism
God and the universe are one, but God is also beyond the universe
Atheism
Disbelief in God. This can either mean an absence of belief (“weak atheism”) or a belief that no God exists (“strong”)
Agnosticism
the belief that we cannot know whether God exists or not, is a type of weak atheism by default.
Teleological Arguments
These are arguments from design. They suggest that the order of the universe can only be explained by a divine designer.
A classic example is a watch: Its parts are designed so as to be suited to a purpose. Supporters contend that the universe reveals the same sort of purpose as a watch
Cosmological Arguments
These arguments contend that a series of causes cannot infinitely regress back without a cause which is itself uncaused. Likewise, contingent objects require an explanation which is to be found in a necessary object
Ontological Arguments
Ontological arguments contend that God’s existence stems from the notion of a supremely perfect being. If God is the being which is supremely perfect, then to say he doesn’t exist would be to say he lacks something compared to the God which is completely the same but also has existence.
Moral Arguments
The existence of morality as an objective feature of the world requires a God to make it.
