Goal Setting Flashcards
Explain what is meant by the term ‘Goal Setting’ and why it is important with regards to participation sport and physical activity
Gaol setting refers to the act of setting targets to aim for with regarding to sports performance or participation in physical activity’
Goal setting stimulates performance, encourages persistence and improves performance by raising confidence and increasing motivation.
How to Lock and Latham (1990) suggest that goal setting influences performance?
1 - Directs the attention of the performer onto the required task or strategy
2 - Increases the effort applied by an athlete
3 - Improves persistence when a task becomes difficult or failure is experienced
4 - Participant becomes increasingly motivated to learn and adopt new approaches to complete a task successfully
Explain the SMARTER method of goal setting
S - Specific to the task
M - Measurable against previous performance/standards
A - Accepted by both coach and performer
R - Realistic so it is challenging yet attainable
T - Timed, a time limit should be given to achieve the task
E - Exciting to stimulate the performer and stop boredom
R - Recorded in check progress and allow reflection
Identify 3 ‘time-based’ goals
1 - Long Term Goals
2 - Medium Term Goals
3 - Short Term Goals
Explain what is meant by a ‘long term goal’
Long term goals are an athlete or performers ‘ultimate aim’.
These would take an extended peril dog time to complete and achieve. This could be improving fitness levels or being chosen for a county or National squad. On their own long term goals can seem daunting and cause anxiety. Long term goal alone will not lead to improved performance.
Explain what is meant by a ‘short term goal’
Short term goals are intended to show immediate success. These should initially be set at the performers existing capability and set in a sequence becoming increasingly more difficult. These form a link between initial ability and long term goals. Jarvis (2006) reported that these are the most effective type of goals to set.
Explain what is meant by a ‘medium term goal’
Medium term goals occur during the short term goal sequence. The major purpose is to endorse the effectiveness of short term gaols and are significant improvement indicators.
Identify 3 ‘activity-based’ goals
1 - Performance Goals
2 - Process Goals
3 - Product Goals
Describe a ‘performance goal’ and give a specific example.
This is a goal that is based on judgments made of an individual against their previous performance.
For example an athlete attempting to run a personal best time or a batter trying to improve average batting score.
Describe a ‘process goal’ and give a specific example.
Process goals are concerned with improving technique to produce better performance.
For example, an athlete looking to improve their sprint start or a batter looking to improve footwork.
Describe a ‘product goal’ and give a specific example.
These are sometimes also referred to as outcome goals. Product goals invoke beating other competitors and are therefore concerned with winning outcomes.
For example an athlete winning a 100m race or a batsman getting the top score in a match.
Define the key term ‘Exercise adherence’ and explain how it can be affected by goal setting.
Exercise adherence involves implementing an exercise regime and persisting with the activities.
The setting of goals can allow a participant to see improvements in performance and lifestyle allowing increased motivation to continue the programme.
