performance goals
performer is compared to only themselves. They compare themselves with what they have previously done or suggest what they are going to do.
outcome goals
used to judge the end result. usually involving comparison with other performers and a lack of care for the performance during this.
are beginners suitable for outcome goals?
no because failure may demotivate them
why are elite performers suitable for outcome goals
many elite performers are driven by winning and performance goals may not be suitable as the desire of winning may be more powerful to motivate them.
what does the S in SMART target setting stand for?
Specific - specific to the demands of the sport/muscles used/movements involved
what does the M in SMART target setting stand for?
measurable - meaning it must be possible to measure whether it has been achieved
what does the A in SMART target setting stand for?
accepted - the goal must be accepted by the performer and the coach if they have one
what does the R in SMART target setting stand for?
realistic - it must be physically capable to complete the goal
what does the T in SMART target setting stand for?
time-bound - it must be set over a fixed period of time
