In the battle of Belleau Wood in 1918, the Germans referred to marines as “Teufelhunden”, “Devil Dogs”

“semper fidelis” Adopted about 1883, meaning always faithful.

The marine corps band has performed at white house functions for every president except George Washington.
Retreat, Hell! We just got here!
Belleau Wood 1918. A marine officers reply when a French officer said there was a general retreat in progress.
