Glycopeptide ABx =

A

Vancomycin

  • Cell wall inhibitor but different mechanism than B lactams
    - -> Bind directly to the Ala-Ala residues (instead of just looking like them)
    • -> Blocks the access of PBPs to these residues and results in inhibition of peptidoglycan synth

Vancomycin characterisitcs

A
  • Useful for Gram + bacteria only
  • most often for drug resistant bacteria : MRSA, Senstive Enterococcus, Strep
  • Oral use for C diff colitis : only after failed therapy with Metronidazole or severe case
  • Resistance is occurring
