Q

What happens to pyruvate after glycolysis under aerobic vs anaerobic conditions?

A

It is converted into acetyl-CoA and enters TCA cycle if oxygen is present and if not it is converted to lactate which leaves the cell.

Q

Describe the three stages of glycolysis.

A
  1. Glucose activation (two phosphorylation reactions convert glucose into fructose 1,6-biphosphate).
  2. Sugar is cleaved into two 3C fragments (called glyceraldehyde 3P or GAP and dihydroxyacetone-P or DHAP).
  3. GAP and DHAP are oxidized by NAD+ to make NADH and also release some ATP.
