Glycolysis (Module 2 Lecture 8) Flashcards

Q
What happens to pyruvate after glycolysis under aerobic vs anaerobic conditions?
A
It is converted into acetyl-CoA and enters TCA cycle if oxygen is present and if not it is converted to lactate which leaves the cell.
1
Q
How many of the ten reactions of glycolysis are reversible?
A
- Seven (also used in gluconeogenesis in liver)
2
Q
Describe the three stages of glycolysis.
A
- Glucose activation (two phosphorylation reactions convert glucose into fructose 1,6-biphosphate).
- Sugar is cleaved into two 3C fragments (called glyceraldehyde 3P or GAP and dihydroxyacetone-P or DHAP).
- GAP and DHAP are oxidized by NAD+ to make NADH and also release some ATP.
