Glycogen metabolism Flashcards

1
Q

What happened when a person is not eaten yet?

A

The blood sugar is low and the hormone glucagon increase. The glucagon stimulates two pathways in the liver to the main blood sugar level.

  • The glucagon cause glycogen to convert to glucose is being produced and send out to the bloodstream
  • The gluconeogenesis of converting pyruvate to glucose is turned on.

Q

What happened when a person has eaten?

A

The blood sugar rise and the hormone insulin increase.
The insulin stimulates glycolysis where glucose is converted to glycogen or pyruvate. Pyruvate is then send to TCA cycle to produce citrate. Citrate is then used to produce fatty acid and it is used for storage (exported to adipose

Q

What are the hormonal effects on glycolysis in skeletal muscle?

A

Skeletal muscle is glucose consuming tissue and it needs glucose for muscle contraction. Glycolysis is central to producing energy ( regulation of this pathway is geared towards glucose breakdown (oxidation)).
Very little gluconeogenesis.

Q

What are the hormonal effects on glycolysis in liver?

A

In the fed state, the glucose in the liver is being stored as glycogen and triacylglyceride.
Gluconeogenesis or glycogen breakdown are stimulated to produce glycose for other tissue.
