Gluteal Region Muscles Flashcards
Superior gemellus attachment
FROM:
*external surface spine of ischium via obturator internus tendon
TO:
*greater trochanter
Superior gemellus action
laterally rotates hip
Superior gemellus innervation
sacral plexus (L5-S2)
Inferior gemellus attachment
FROM:
*proximal ischial tuberosity via obturator internus tendon
TO:
*greater trochanter
Inferior gemellus action
laterally rotates hip
Inferior gemellus innervation
sacral plexus (L4-S1)
Gluteus maximus attachment
FROM:
*aponeurosis of the erector spinae
*sacrum
*sacrotuberous ligament
*posterior gluteal line (innominate)
TO:
*greater trochanter
*gluteal tuberosity of the femur
*iliotibial tract
Gluteus maximus action
extends and laterally rotates hip
Gluteus maximus innervation
inferior gluteal nerve (L5-S2)
Gluteus medius attachments
FROM:
*external iliac surface
TO:
*oblique ridge on the lateral aspect of
the greater trochanter
*gluteal aponeurosis
Gluteus medius action
*abducts & medially rotates hip
*keeps the pelvis level when opposite leg is raised
Gluteus medius innervation
superior gluteal nerve (L4-S1)
Gluteus minimus attachment
FROM:
*external iliac surface
*margin of the greater sciatic notch
TO:
*anterolateral aspect of the greater trochanter
Gluteus minimus action
abducts & medially rotates hip; and keeps the pelvis level when opposite leg is raised
Gluteus minimus innervation
superior gluteal nerve (L4-S1)
Obturator internus attachment
FROM:
*anterolateral wall of the pelvis
*obturator membrane
TO:
*medial surface of the greater trochanter
Obturator internus action
laterally rotates hip
Obturator internus innervation
nerve to the obturator internus (from sacral plexus; L5-S2)
Piriformis attachment
FROM:
*anterolateral sacrum
*posterior inferior iliac spine
TO:
*upper border of the greater trochanter
Piriformis action
abducts & laterally rotates hip
Piriformis innervation
nerve to piriformis (S1-2)
Quadratus femoris attachment
FROM:
*ischial tuberosity
TO:
*quadrate tubercle of the femur
Quadratus femoris action
laterally rotates hip
Quadratus femoris innervation
nerve to the quadratus femoris (from sacral plexus; L4-S1)
