Gluteal Region Flashcards
What type of joint is the hip joint?
Hip joint is a ball and socket joint (synovial)
What are the three ligaments of the hip joint? What are their actions?
- Iliofemoral: prevent hyperextension
- Ischiofemoral: prevent hyperextension
- Pubofemoral: prevent hyperabduction (runs medial-lateral)
What is the primary artery of the hip joint and what are its three branches? What does each branch supply blood to?
Deep artery of thigh (Profunda Femoris) branches into…
- Acetabular branch: femur head
- Medial circumflex femoral a.: femur head and neck
- Lateral circumflex femoral a.: lateral thigh
What are the two actions of the Gluteus Maximus? What is its innervation?
Gluteus Maximus is innervated by Inferior gluteal n.
- Extend hip
- Laterally rotate hip
What are the two actions of the Gluteus Medius? What is its innervation?
Gluteus Medius is innervated by Superior gluteal n.
- Abduct hip
- Medially rotate hip
What are the two actions of the Gluteus Minimus? What is its innervation?
Gluteus Minimus is innervated by Superior gluteal n.
- Abduct hip
- Medially rotate hip
What are the three actions of the Tensor Fasciae Latae? What is its innervation?
Tensor Fasciae Latae is innervated by Superior gluteal n.
- Flex hip
- Abduct hip
- Medially rotate hip
What is Trendelenburg Test and what two muscles and one nerve is it evaluating?
Evaluates function of Gluteus Medius and Gluteus Minimus, as well as the Superior gluteal n.
- Test involves having patient stand on one leg - if contralateral hip droops, may indicate avulsion of muscle or lesion of nerve on non-drooping side
What are the four deep muscles of the gluteal region? What are their action and innervation?
All deep gluteal muscles are innervated by small branches of the sacral plexus, and action is laterally rotate hip
- Piriformis
- Superior gemellus
- Inferior gemellus
- Quadratus femoris
